TL;DR Good if you’re only listening to Electronic, Hip-Hop and similar genres. However at this price point, I would expect it to do well in everything else.

These look great, like nothing else on the market. Quite comfortable, and built like a tank. Pretty easy to connect to and I didn’t have any Bluetooth issues.

To start, these do sound better wired and even better connected to a dac/amp. My first impressions were very disappointing. Huge bass, recessed mids, and a treble nowhere to be heard. This was mainly listening to pop, R&B and the like. Lots of mid focused music. (Yes I know these are DJ headphones, but I started with what I usually listen to to get a good starting point.)

Moving on to some electronic music such as Porter Robinson, Louis the Child, and Masson, these really start to shine. I’d still recommend boosting the treble, but these really sound fun and exciting when you listen to the right genre.

The bass takes the center stage, as you’d expect, but it extends deep, it’s fast, controlled and doesn’t bleed too much into the mids. The mids aren’t much to write home about, they’re recessed but they’re there. Once again, not much treble but it’s enough to compliment the bass. Soundstage isn’t great, imaging was okay, and detail was decent but subpar at this price.

I personally thought that the Beats Studio 3’s were more well-rounded headphones. They have less impact in the lower frequencies, and certainly don’t reach as deep, but they have a bit more treble that makes it better for more genres and everyday listening. I will say that these V-Moda’s are more fun, clearer, and more detailed.

However, at this price point, you can get the Studio 3’s for considerably cheaper due to the constant discounts. If you need wireless headphones, I personally think that the Sony WH-1000x series are much better overall than both the V-Moda’s and Beats. But if you need a pair as a DJ set, these are quite good and will last you a long time.

These were excellent-sounding headphones, but the ones I'd purchased were more than likely in my store's high-end headphones case for way longer than they should have been.

I got them home and paired them with my computer without any issues. Drove them for a few hours before calling it a night. Woke up the following morning to find that the headphones just would not power on anymore--ridiculous, as I had them sitting on the charger all night to make sure they were ready to go the next morning.

They work perfectly (and in some cases, better) wired in directly, but if I paid $350 for a pair of wireless headphones I would want to make sure the wireless functionality works without flaws. I returned them within two days and swapped them out for a pair of Sennheisers.

The sound quality of these V-Modas were excellent, I had no complaints about that.

The build quality of them was fantastic.

Connectivity was great while it worked. The fact the battery supposedly died within 12 hours to never work again is just ridiculous and hopefully something that they will fix in updated models.

My only real biggest complaint aside from its defect was that the ear cups were a little bit too small. These are not over-the-ear headphones unless you've got some small ears.

I purchased the V-Moda Crossfade 2 Wireless Codex headphones about a week ago. I was instantly impressed, and the time since then only reinforces that notion. Read on to learn more about the different aspects of my experience, from unboxing to initial setup and finally to use. You will also find a few kinds words for Best Buy, who made this experience fun and enjoyable!

    Unboxing

The unboxing experience was simple and straightforward. Given the sometimes superfluous packaging of modern electronics, it was great to have just a few inserts and a sticker that my daughter loves. The product box is well-made and sturdy, the packaging solid. I thought the snap on the box was cool, not something you see every day. I purchased the rose gold version of this headset, and the glisten as it first came out of the deep dark of the box was simply stellar.

    Initial Setup

The headphones power up quickly with a single slide bar on the bottom of one can. This toggle is also used for attaching via Bluetooth, a simple process that allowed me to connect to my computer, phone and TV within just a few moments. The shoulder buttons reside on the same can as the on/off switch, and are used for playback features and volume control. You will want to take a few minutes to read over instructions, and that only to understand how to use the buttons effectively. This process was effortless, a rare moment of simplicity that only promised good things to come.

    The Sound

I listened to the Crossfade 2 Codex extensively over the past week. I work from home, and these headphones are great for reducing external noise and distraction. While not noise-cancelling, the snug fit of the unit greatly reduces outside interference, leaving you free to enjoy the soundscape contained within. Highs are specific and crystalline, the mid range sumptuous and warm in ways that surprise. Other reviews mentioned a somewhat bass-heavy experience, although I find that largely depends on your musical preferences. What I can say is that there were several moments when a song I have listened to for years sounded brand new and different. The 1995 Jekyll & Hyde musical by Wildhorn and Bricusse is a bombastic and taxing performance that often distorts speaker performance, but the Crossfade 2 took measure and excelled. Wireless connectivity is excellent, although you will expect even better sound when using a wired connection.

    Best Buy

The purchasing experience with Best Buy was uncomplicated, with an earlier than expected delivery. External packaging was robust and kept the headphones safe. The aftercare was also excellent. Perusing the 3-day sales going on this weekend, I noticed the headphones were on sale for $249. I hopped onto the website and asked about the sale and Price Match Guarantee. In less than five minutes, Barbara L. refunded the difference in my purchase price, making this an even better experience!

    Final Thoughts

The purchase initially felt like a risk when compared to more recognized brands like Bose and Sony. What I found with deeper research is that this was an equal if not superior product with a somewhat smaller yet equally devout fan base. There is a shorter battery life for this model when compared to those brands, although that is largely a non-factor for me. I wanted the Magnolia experience offered by Best Buy, to feel like I was extending myself in the pursuit of sonic excellence. My risk was rewarded in this case, and I absolutely feel excited every time I put these headphones on. The V-Moda Crossfade 2 Wireless Codex is a terrific headphone, and I only expect better as I learn how to properly use the device. This unit is accurately valued at $349, and is a steal at $249. If you are in the market, I highly suggest giving these headphones a try!

**For those who may have missed it, there is a free Best Buy cross-promotion with V-Moda that allows you to receive a free set of customized side shields upon registering the headphones. Here is the link to instructions: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/clp-tv-home-theater/vmoda-shield-deal/pcmcat1526567866427.c?id=pcmcat1526567866427. I am leaving this review to begin my customization process, having received notification yesterday of my confirmed promotion. **

They work better than I expected. The sound quality is very good, they pair up with devices easily, and they are comfortable to wear for long lengths of time. After charging them I listened to a program on TV with these on while my fiance, who works from home, held a lengthy conversation on the phone near me. I did not hear her conversation and I was able to enjoy the TV show without distracting her.

This would be my second V moda cross fade. When it arrived I noticed the volume up button didn’t click like the other buttons. I also noticed that after a day of charge easily, it still would not say it was full charged. Sound quality is ok, enough bass, ok meds and highs. To be fair I am comparing sound quality to planar headphones. Compared to the the original crossfade, the crossfade 2 codex besides folding shut didn’t notice much difference in sound. They are sturdy headphones though.

Definitely not the headphones for me, or anyone else with human sized ears. The clamping pressure is tight out of the box, which isn't really an issue if you go out of your way to stretch it out at the beginning of your purchase to loosen it up. Earmuffs are *very* small. They do sell XL versions of the earmuffs on Amazon, but I went for a different pair of headphones instead since the audio on these wasn't overly impressive.

Bluetooth manages to stay connected and consistent, but the short battery life means that you'll be having to charge this thing daily if you're a heavy consumer like me. Audio was comparable to my $35 Somic G941, which is a compliment since the G914 trades blows with $250 headphones for breakfast.

The absolute only thing this headphone has going for it is build quality. It feels very sturdy and malleable, like you could have a wrestling match with it and it'd come out unscathed. Not that I did that. Beyond that it's a flashy yet average to mildly beyond average pair of headphones, while also being extremely uncomfortable. Condensation was building up on my ears also; which can be an issue if it gets into the drivers in the long run.

Overall, wouldn't recommend. If you want balanced, crisp audio go for the HD560s, if you want insane bass / battery life go for the Skullcandy Evo, If you want ANC go for the Sony.

My husband got these for me from Santa. We are Bose users, both having had multiple Bose headphones over the years. The V-Moda is clearly the way to go. Sleek styling yes, but the functionality is great. The Bluetooth vs. wired is undetectable, and that was a worry for me. The phone connectivity and call quality is fantastic. I'd say, "Get Em!"

Best Buy offers much better options for the money. These are not cheap headphones. Battery died after 7 months of light usage. Battery is not replacable. V-Moda customer service is horrible. They sound good (better wired than wireless) but, not great. Save yourself time, money, and aggravation and buy something else. V-Moda offered me a new pair at 50% off. I'd rather spend double and get something that functions as advertised.

I've been using these headphones for the past 6 months for work and home. This is one of the best pairs of headphones I've ever had.

    Pros:

These are extremely durable, and with their carrying case makes them perfect for travelling. The sound quality is also top notch.

The noise cancellation works well only when you're listening to audio. I work in an open environment and the noise cancellation is enough to block out anything around me during use.

    Cons:

The Bluetooth speaker works well, except for the open environment. The mic works almost too well and picks up other people easily. There is a mic accessory that can be purchased and used which can alleviate this, but it can only be used over 3.5mm and disables the Bluetooth when it's attached.

The price is a little high, but you'll end up spending about the same purchasing a Sennheiser or Bose pair of headphones, so its comparable to competitors.

This is my second pair. The first pair I got out to my truck still in the parking lot and the right channel didn't work. They didn't have anymore. Got another pair at another Best Buy and they worked. The sound is outstanding. Design factors not so much. I opened up the case one time and went to pick them up and somehow one of the headphones managed to twist and it came off the band. Weird. I put it back on and it has happened again but it shouldn't have happened in the first place. Oh and that first pair I called V Moda customer service thinking they would be apologetic and say something like "hey sorry that happened to you we want to make it right." Instead I got " go return them and get another pair" Great sound but not impressed overall.

Like many who look at the specifications for this product I was on edge especially with the $350 price tag and the lack of features.

After disappointments with other manufacturer's I decided to give these a shot and I must say I have no regrets. Although these headphones do not contain touch controls, ANC, USB-C charging and are a couple generations behind with Bluetooth standards they sound great. The connectivity with my Pixel 3 is solid and the sound is clear with a wide sound stage. You can definitely hear the separation of instruments and they have plenty of bass without being bass heavy. Vocals come across clear and upfront.

Although these cans are not noise canceling they block out a ton of sound even at low volumes which is a plus. The sound is identical regardless if you are using a wired connection or Bluetooth. The travel case provided is solid, very compact, well designed and the design of the headphones are amazing. I have received several compliments on the design as well as the sound. These are my new favorite over the ear headphones.

On another note I did not experience any delays when watching YouTube videos or movies over Bluetooth or wired. Everything played fine without any issues.

The VMODA company is awesome at what it does. It makes headphones almost indestructible and they sound great. I was looking for something different and this set just didn't have it although they were awesome and sounded great. I wanted to see what a true Audiophile wanted in a headphone so I had to go and buy something by Focal, a media player with MQA, and yep even more because I had to amp that sound up too... Look guys go with the Vmoda and be happy because although there is a difference in the sound it's almost crazy to carry a second laptop bag for your sound setup and to be honest... I worry all the time if my equipment will be damaged. Guess I am an audiophile now... Music sounds like an 8track from my dad's old truck on my girls system kinda wish I didn't know...

I have gone through my fair share of headphones over the last few years. Beats, Sony, Bose, Bang & Olufsen, Sennheiser, Sol-Republic, Bowers & Wilkin, and V-Moda. I have tried just wireless headphones, wireless noise cancelling headphones, wireless earbuds, and wireless noise cancelling earbuds. My wife would say that I'm picky and I always find a pair that I like but either end up returning or selling because I discover something I don't like about them 2-3 months after I buy them.

So I finally decided to get rid of my Bose (due to Bluetooth issues) and not get a pair of noise cancelling headphones but rather ones that had good physical isolation. I still have a pair of V-Moda M-100 wired headphones and they have served me well. They're 7 years old now but still look new. They've been dropped, splashed with water and other chemicals, and have survided multiple trips to the beach. But they're wired only and I want a wireless solution.

Enter the Crossfade 2 Wireless Codex Edition. I had held out on the previous wireless Crossfade headphones as they relied on the SBC or SBC and aptX codecs. Well, I have iPhones and iPads and wanted to take advantage of them. Apple uses SBC or AAC for Bluetooth. Now that V-Moda supports AAC, I decided to give these a try.

The build quality is still top notch. These feel like tanks. There's a lot to be said about using metal and faux leather for headphones instead of plastic and faux leather. I have twisted the headband every which way and it always pops back. The earpads are easily removable and can be replaced ($20), the outer earcup covers area removable and you can order them in different colors/materials and even customize them, they fold up into a small factor, and their rigid carrying case is extremely durable while having just enough space to hold the headphones, their charging cable, and their 3.5mm cable. There are small plastic covers on the case that can be removed just in case you use these headphones in a warm environment and they need to vent.

The rose gold accents are a nice touch and match well with my iPhone XS Max. V-Moda doesn't specify the version of Bluetooth these use on their website but some are reporting Bluetooth 3.0. It doesn't really matter as wireless connectivity to my iPhone has been rock solid. I can get about 150 ft away from my iPhone (with direct line of sight) before the connection begins to drop out and about 60 ft away from my iPhone through a few walls. These also connect to two devices at once so I can watch a movie on my iPad and answer a call on my iPhone without having to un-pair and re-pair the headphones to each device.

My only real complaint is, just like with every other pair of Bluetooth headphones, their latency is corrected for on a per-app basis. So some games are fine, the iOS default video player is fine, Vuduu is fine, as are Netflix and HBO. Some app, such as Amazon Prime Video and YouTube, don't correct for the latency and there's a visual (and audible) gap between when the sound should play and when it actually plays. I'll either plug the headphones in (which work even when their battery is drained) or just use Safari for watching YouTube videos.

The Crossfade 2 Wireless Codex headphones have the widest soundstage I have heard from closed-back headphones. There is a wide separation between instruments and I can almost pinpoint where an instrument is playing in a room. Before, with the M-100's, V-Moda focused on lows and highs while having slightly recessed mids. They were still more detailed that most mainstream headphones but they distinctively had a v-shaped sound signature. V-Moda has since changed the drivers in their headphones and these are much more balanced. The bass is still heavy but it's never overpowering. The mids come through with great detail as do the highs. These are still fun sounding headphones but they're more accurate and balanced than the M-100's are. Not as nuetral as the B&O H9i or B&W PX headphones but definitely more fun.

I have a big head and these are comfortable to wear for hours on end. They do have more clamping force but the earpads are larger now and more comfortable. There isn't much room in the earcups and, for some people, these will be more on-ear than over-ear but they fit me just fine. They have a slim profile and don't stick out like most other headphones. They are also much more comfortable than the B&W PX headphones, those aren't comfortable at all.

The only true issue I have with these particular headphones is that they charge via microUSB. At this point, everything I have is either USB-C or Lightning. Lightning for my iPhone and USB-C for my MacBook, iPad Pro, Bluetooth speaker, and even Apple Watch (its a USB-C to puck cable). It would have been nice to not worry about having one additional cable that's a different (old) format. Then again, the cable fits in their case just fine so it's not the end of the world.

I highly recommend these headphones. They sound great, are well built, you can customize them with inexpensive aftermarket parts, their battery life is still pretty good (14 hours), V-Moda has an excellent warranty, and they have a great trade-in service. You'll have to deal with miroUSB and no noise cancellation but their noise isollation is pretty good.

I originally bought the Sony WH-1000XM3 wasn't 100% satisfied and exchanged for the Bang & Olufsen BeoPlay H9i. Those sounded a lot cleaner and crisper. Just didn't have the deep bass I was looking for. I took those back and bought, got $ back, the V-Modas. These sound good. No, they are not as crisp as the H9i nor do they have ANC, but they do sound good and the bass is better. For the ANC I use my Dolby Dimension headphones.

I do recommend buying the XL ear cups for the V-Modas. The are thicker and give a better sound stage. They are simple to replace once you get over the anxiety of tearing apart a $300+ pair of cans. The pads will be about $20. I don't recommend getting an off brand set to save 2 bucks. Get the ones mada by V-Moda.

The sound profile is slightly different from the original Crossfade Wireless, with a little more bass thrown in, but it's still a great set in wired and wireless mode. Battery life still needs some work, the cushions are waaaaay more comfortable, and the folding hinges are a wonderful addition.

These things thump! The bass is not overwhelming but it's certainly present. They feel extremely well made so disability is not a question. Ear cups are plush and spacious and although these weigh in on the heavier side (slightly over 300 grams) my head didn't get fatigued after prolonged use. They don't have active noise canceling but the noise isolation is excellent. Not a lot of sound bleed so you won't disturb folks sitting near you.

Overall these are a great pair of headphones (especially for hip hop heads). Version 3 should increase the battery life, add support for more audio codecs, improve microphone quality, and they'd likely dethrone the Sony wh-1000xm3's.

In the past 5 years I've had 4 main pairs of headphones, and 3 were made by v-Moda. My first pair of their headphones was a wired pair, which I gave to my girlfriend when I got my second pair, the Crossfade 2. Recently those fell while I was charging them, and one of the detail pieces cracked, so I upgraded to the codex edition, and I'm enjoying them a lot. There's really no going wrong with V-Moda
